Many people refer to a Yellow Light Of Death as a blinking red light simply because the yellow light is only visible for a split second. The yellow light of death and the blinking red light are the same thing. The PS3 will start up flash yellow and then start blinking red. This is the PS3′s general hardware failure code and is basically saying there is something wrong with the hardware inside the system that is keeping it from starting up.
Most of the time the error code is attributed to broken solder points under the graphics processor (GPU) known as the RSX chip. This chip helps display some of the complex textures and resolutions you see when playing a game. The other chip that can also be at fault is the Cell processor (CPU). The CPU is made up of 8 individual processors that render graphics and process physics in games and programs run by the PS3, it is essentially the brain of the system. More often than not, the RSX chip will be at fault when your PS3 gives off a blinking red light.
